The chemicals in cigarette smoke are known to cause, amongst other diseases, a variety of cancers, the biggest killer being lung cancer, emphysema (the sufferer finds it very difficult to breathe because the area over which gases can be exchanged between the blood and the air has been reduced) and heart disease.
